What Is a Sabbath-Keeping Church? Learn what it means to worship on the biblical Sabbath, study the whole Bible, and follow Yeshua through a Hebraic understanding of Scripture.
Many people today are asking sincere questions about the Sabbath.
Why do some believers gather on Saturday? Is the Sabbath only for Jewish people? Did Jesus, also called Yeshua, keep the Sabbath? What does the whole Bible teach about rest, worship, and obedience to God?
At Olive Branch Fellowship in Seguin, Texas, we believe these questions matter because they lead us back to Scripture. Our desire is not to follow tradition, but rather to return to the biblical foundations of the faith and understand God’s Word from Genesis through Revelation. Olive Branch Fellowship describes itself as a Christian congregation seeking to return to the biblical foundations of faith in Yeshua through a Hebraic understanding of Scripture.
What Is the Sabbath?
The Sabbath, or Shabbat, is the seventh day of the week. It was established by God at creation, long before there was a nation of Israel.
Genesis tells us:
“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.”— Genesis 2:2
The Sabbath is a gift from God — a weekly rhythm of rest, worship, remembrance, and restoration.
In a world that constantly pushes people to work more, hurry more, and carry more, Sabbath reminds us that we are not machines. We are created by God, sustained by God, and called to trust Him.
Why Do Some Christians Worship on Saturday?
Many believers are surprised to learn that the biblical Sabbath is from Friday evening to Saturday evening. In Scripture, the day begins at evening, as seen in the creation account: “the evening and the morning were the first day” (Genesis 1:5).
Yeshua Himself kept the Sabbath. The apostles also continued to gather, teach, and reason from the Scriptures on the Sabbath. For many Sabbath-keeping believers today, worshiping on Saturday is not about rejecting other Christians. It is about honoring the pattern God gave in Scripture.
At Olive Branch Fellowship, our practices include observing the Sabbath, keeping the biblical feasts, and walking in obedience to God’s commandments as expressions of faithfulness to Him.
Is Keeping the Sabbath Legalism?
This is an important question.
Biblical obedience is not the same as legalism.
Legalism says, “I obey so God will accept me.” Biblical faith says, “Because God has redeemed me, I want to walk in His ways.”
We are not saved by keeping the Sabbath. We are saved by grace through faith in Yeshua the Messiah. But grace does not lead us away from obedience. Grace teaches our hearts to love what God loves.
Yeshua said:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”— John 14:15
At Olive Branch Fellowship, we believe obedience to God’s commandments is a response of love and faithfulness, not a way to earn salvation. The congregation’s statement of belief affirms that the Torah reveals God’s character and guides His people in righteous living.
Why Study the Torah as Believers in Yeshua?
The Torah (the first 5 book of the bible known as the Old Testament) is often misunderstood. Some people think it is only a list of rules. But the Hebrew word Torah means instruction, teaching, or direction.
The Torah reveals God’s holiness, His covenant faithfulness, His wisdom, and His desire for His people to live set apart. When we study the Torah through Yeshua, we see the beauty of God’s redemptive plan more clearly.
Yeshua said:
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”— Matthew 5:17
To fulfill does not mean to erase. It means to bring fullness, meaning, and completion.
When we study the Torah, the Prophets, the Writings, and the New Testament together, we begin to see one unified story: God calling His people into covenant relationship through the Messiah.
Olive Branch Fellowship’s beliefs emphasize that the entire Bible — from Genesis through Revelation — is the inspired Word of God and reveals one unified message of redemption through the Messiah.
